Ultimate Comparison Guide for Beginners – Kodi and Plex

Kodi and Plex are competing media centers — they give you access to all your videos, images, and songs from one place. They also let you stream content to multiple devices and watch live TV channels. Although Kodi and Plex serve a similar purpose, they are different in many ways. Both offer unique features, which makes it hard to proclaim one as being better than the other.

Which service is right for me?

So who wins in this Plex vs Kodi comparison? Good question. Kodi and Plex offer the same basic feature, which is to bring all your media content under one roof. But each of them also has a set of unique features aimed at a specific audience.

If you want a service that allows you to organize your entire media library as well as share it with other devices effortlessly, Plex is the way to go. It’s also a great option for those who want to watch live TV legally, although you’ll need additional gear to make that happen. But keep in mind there are fewer live TV channels available than on Kodi.

In case you’re looking for a media center solution that’s free of charge but still offers several useful features, Kodi is more up your alley. It might not be as pretty or easy to use as Plex, but it does have a lot more customization options. It also gives you access to a lot of add-ons for watching live TV, although some aren’t legal. Like with Plex, you can also stream videos, music, and other content from one device to another, but you’ll have to invest some time and effort to set it up.

What are Plex and Kodi?

Plex is a streaming media server that lets you play movies, shows, and music on your TV and computer, mobile devices and streaming boxes. It sorts and manages your library, with full support for metadata and advanced features like on-the-fly video and audio conversion. It’s compatible with most streaming devices, including Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Fire Stick, and many more. Plex also has official apps for Android and iOS.

For your computer, you can download the latest version of the Plex server here. You can find the right Plex client for each device in your app store. Plex is available for free, but also has a subscription service that unlocks premium features.

Kodi is a streaming media software that runs on your TV, computer, and mobile or streaming devices. It’s an open-source project, with support for a huge array of add-ons, or software plugins, that let you stream content from the web or play downloaded videos and music. Kodi is known for being extremely customizable. With a little time and effort, you’re guaranteed to find a look and feel that you love.

Kodi

Pros: Kodi is always free. Its open-source nature makes it highly customizable and has led to a robust library of add-ons, which include many options for watching live TV. Cons: While very user-friendly, Kodi still feels a bit less polished than Plex. And Kodi is far more suited to watching content on a single device: out of the box, it cannot stream content to multiple devices.

Plex

Pros: Plex is a user-friendly service that makes one device’s media library available on all sorts of devices on (and, with Plex Pass, beyond) your home network. Cons: Plex is less customizable and offers less live TV support than Kodi. Plex’s best features cost money.
